Traoré and Smith add to their goal count in home loss to angel city
Foxborough, MA (August 31, 2026) - Boston Legacy fell 5-2 to Angel City at home on Monday night.
Aïssata Traoré sparked Boston’s offense early in the match, driving down the field and picking out Sammy Smith on the weak side in the attacking third. Angel City responded quickly, with Ally Sentnor rifling a strike from the edge of the 18 that found its way into the net. The Legacy maintained their attacking energy, finding Alba Caño in front of the net at 6’, but her volley soared high. In the 8’, Sammy Smith whipped a left-footed strike into the corner of the net from the top of the 18. The score stayed level for a brief period before Angel City retook the lead in the 13’, sending a deflection into the net following a corner. Boston’s pressure remained high as they sought to even the score once again. Angel City stretched their lead at 18’, slipping a ball just inside the post past goalkeeper Laurel Ivory.
The Legacy kept pressing high against Angel City’s back line. Angel City made a few services into Boston’s box as the half wound down. The final opportunity for the visitors came off a corner at 45’, but Ivory made an impressive save to deflect the ball off the crossbar and out.
Ivory was called into action early in the second half, ultimately making a clearance. Angel City managed a couple crosses into space that couldn’t find a target. Boston saw a chance on a 53’ corner that found the head of Jorelyn Carabali, but the header went wide. At 58’, following an impressive denial by Ivory, Angel City’s Prisca Chilufya finished her own rebound to give the visitors another goal.
The Legacy made a trio of changes at 61’, sending Sarah Schupansky, Bianca St-Georges, and Barbara Olivieri on for Annie Karich, Nichelle Prince, and Josefine Hasbo. Today marked Schupansky’s debut with Boston and St-Georges’ 100th NWSL appearance.
Angel City’s attack created an opportunity at 63’, but was denied by a strong save from Ivory. They found success just minutes later when Maiara Niehues struck a ball through traffic and into the back of the net. Boston looked to inject energy with another pair of substitutions: Amanda Allen and Amanda Gutierres replaced Emerson Elgin and Nicki Hernandez.
In the 77’, Deja Davis got a head on the end of a set piece, but was off-target. Another set of opportunities came at 78’ and 84’, with two on-target headers that ultimately could not evade Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson. Ivory came up big at 85’, turning a shot away for an Angel City corner. Boston scored a second goal at 88’, with Traoré rattling a header into the back of the net off a corner kick. The two sides played out the final minutes of the match hard, until the final whistle confirmed a 5-2 defeat for the Legacy.
