Sammy Smith scores lone goal in 4-1 defeat at Louisville
Louisville, KY (August 15, 2026) - Boston lost on the road, with Sammy Smith delivering the lone goal for the Legacy in a 4-1 defeat at Racing Louisville.
Boston pressured Louisville's back line in the early minutes of the match. In the 6’, a short set piece from Alba Caño found Lilly Reale, who played it out to Nichelle Prince for a cross that was claimed by Louisville goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer. In the 7’, Louisville got a look off a corner that went just over the crossbar toward the far post. Reale sent a ball into the box in the 9’ and produced a scramble in front of the goal before Louisville eventually cleared.
Boston combined well up the right sideline, but struggled to penetrate. In the 22’, a Louisville shot deflected off the outside of the post. Barbara Olivieri had a shot blocked in the 25’, then fired another on the half-turn in the 26’ that went just wide of the far post. Louisville's Emma Sears delivered a low shot wide in the 29’.
Louisville found their way onto the scoreboard In the 44th minute, when Kayla Fischer wrapped a shot around Casey Murphy for the opening goal, putting Louisville up 1-0 going into halftime.
Boston opened the second half with a substitution, bringing on Jorelyn Carabali for Nicki Hernandez after the break.
Alba Caño had two chances early in the half: a low strike in the 48’ that Bloomer saved, and a stronger shot in the 50’ that was also on target but claimed by Bloomer. In the 53’, Kayla Fischer drew a penalty, which Katie O’Kane converted to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Boston strung together some impressive possessions in the attacking third but couldn’t generate on-target shots. In the 59’, Emma Sears one-touched a chipped ball over the top into the back of the net.
In the 60’, Boston made three substitutions: Amanda Gutierres for Aïssata Traoré, Sammy Smith for Alba Caño, and Josefine Hasbo for Aleigh Gambone. In the 62’, Kayla Fischer scored her second goal, a one-touch volley off a cross, to make the score 4-0 with just under 30 minutes to play.
The Legacy continued probing Louisville’s defense for gaps but struggled to create any real threats. Boston saw a few more chances to close out the half, including a corner that was headed just over the crossbar. Early in stoppage time, a goalkeeper misstep led to Boston’s best chance as they got two shots off amid a disorganized defense, but couldn’t connect. At 90+4’, Bianca St. Goerges rifled a cross in for Sammy Smith, who headed the ball into the far post to put Boston on the board.
